Customs
An old custom of "Riding the stang"
was carried out in the village January 1904 and reported in the
Hull Times as follows:- "The peaceful parish of Broomfleet
was treated on Saturday to an unwanted surprise, when the old
custom of "riding the stang" was carried out, because
the inhabitants had taken umbrage at the conduct of a son towards
his father. While the father went to the police for protection
and to take out a summons, the villagers showed their displeasure
at the young man's conduct by "riding the stang" over
him. A straw effigy was placed in a four wheeled wagon and dragged
through the streets accompanied by a howling, yelling crowd who
made the greatest possible noise with old cans and tins of every
description. After parading the village, the effigy was taken
to a field, soundly beaten and then burned, accompanied by a firing
of guns and the howls of the crowds. The process was repeated
on the Monday and the Tuesday, as according to custom it has to
be carried out on three nights". The dictionary gives a "stang"
as being a stake or a pole or alternatively to string or to prick
and the meaning of "riding the stang" as "Punishment
by being carried astride of a stang". The family in dispute
is thought to have been a branch of the Hutchinson family but
it is not clear what the son did to his father or what the final
outcome was, but it is interesting to know that the villagers
were concerned for their neighbour and were prepared to put on
a show of support for the father.
Eclipse
The moon passing in front of the sun occurred
over England approximately on the 11th minute of the 11th hour
on the 11th day of August 1999, covering approximately 95% of
the sun whilst over Yorkshire. Although it was a cloudy day at
Broomfleet a good sighting was made and over a ten minute period
the temperature fluctuated from 64°F (18°C) down to
52°F (11°C) and then back to 64°F.
The vicar of St. Mary's the Rev. Reader was the
first person in the village to own a motor cycle and side car. When
he went up the street for the first time Mr. Martin-Moore who farmed
at Bridge Garm in the centre of the village went out to his sons
who were ploughing in one of the far fields and instructed them
to take the horses back to the farm across the fields and now down
the street because "there's a fellow with summot that's banging
and meking a noise that I'v never heard afore".

Sport
Although they did not have great facilities Broomfleet
people had always shown a great interest in sporting activities
and for such a small community in the early 1900's organised some
large events.
The Broomfleet Schools Children's Sports Day
The Broomfleet school never had a playing field
but in 1920/21 the then school headmaster Mr W Frankish started
a Broomfleet Schools Sports Day which continued for a good number
of years.
The Broomfleet Feast / Sports Day
The Broomfleet Feast / Sports Day must have been
established approximately 1909 and was held on the Saturday after
Trinity which is the 2nd Saturday after Whitsun. (Newport village
held their day on the Wednesday or Thursday previous to Broomfleet.)
Although it was a small village the Broomfleet Feast was one of
the major yearly events of the area. and people came from not
only the local villages but from Hull and beyond which in the
time of the horse and cart was a great distance. The event was
held in one of the grass fields near to the centre of the village,
with horse showing, running races, cycling races on the grass
with entries which numbered into the hundreds. Broomfleet had
a brass band in the early years of the century and this would
play at the feast, along with other bands from other villages.
The reports of a number of the Feast / Sports Days have been shown
below as they give a good account of the people of the village.
There was a meeting in April 1920 and it was
decided to ask Shipley Brothers of Driffield to attend that year
with their " Steam Horses" as there was to be a fun
fair with the usual roundabouts and sidestalls at the feast. The
N.E.R. Co. stopped trains at Broomfleet so the people could attend
the annual feast day. 12.35 p.m. Hull to Leeds, 12.45 p.m. Goole
to Hull, 9.09 p.m. Selby to Hull and 9.24 p.m. Hull to Doncaster
all stopped at Broomfleet on that day in 1920.
The 11th Annual Broomfleet Feast, Horse Show
and Sports were therefore held around 1920 in a field kindly lent
for the occasion by Mr Frank Tindle of Holme Farm. The weather
was splendid and there was a record attendance of visitors from
all parts of the district.

The South cave Brass Band played at the interval
and the Vicar Rev A J Reader presented the prizes and remembered
their President Col Harrison-Bradley who had recently died. Squire
Seed of Everthorpe Hall and Mr H A Stickney regretted that they
were unable to attend and had sent two guineas each towards the
Foal show funds and Col the Hon F S Jackson was also unable to
attend.
The vicar A J Reader at the 1923 event saw two
drunken ex soldiers were stripped to the waist showing off their
war wounds and wrestling in the field and he stepped in and stopped
them and sent them on their way.
In the mid 1920's Mr Joe Corrigan paid £5
rent for the field and in turn he charged the other attractions
such as the shooting galleries, coconut shies, try your strength
machines etc. The Corrigans had a lovely caravan, which they would
sit outside, he wearing a bowler and his wife dressed up wearing
a white lace trimmed apron. In 1927 he came with a big new steam
engine that was called "Try Again". The Corrigan family
continued to attend with their " Roundabouts " regularly
to the feast in the 1930's and up to the beginning of the 2nd
world war. In a book published in 1972 titled "Ups and Downs
and Roundabouts" written by Arthur Edwin Corrigan he writes
of coming to Broomfleet in 1931 and going into a field down a
narrow lane (this would be alongside the Pigeoncote Farm). The
weather was bad and coming out of the field the trailer with the
roundabout on it, slid into the deep dike that was there at that
time, tipping off
Page 100
its load. With the Steam Engine they managed to pull out the trailer
but the roundabout was still in the dike. Willing villagers soon
got to work and everything was pulled out and piled back onto the
trailer even though some of the men had to work up to their chest
in the water as the trailer and contents had blocked and dammed
the stream that ran at that time. He mentions that the Rev Reader
was passing by and said to the slightly annoyed driver "Have
patience man, Job had patience". Aye " said the driver
" But he didn't have a B****** set of roundabouts in a dike
did he " or words to the effect.
It was in 1924 that a Broomfleet born man Cyril
Houseman first took an interest in athletics and entered the Feast
races at Broomfleet winning the Mile and the 120 yards. He was
at that time employed by the Railway (LNER) and was moved to the
Hemsworth District of South Yorkshire were he joined the Hallamshire
Harriers Athletic Club. He was six foot tall and trained seriously
and started to win open races. 1925;- British Half Mile Railway
Championship, 1926;- LNER Champion Silver Cup & Gold Medal

in a time of four minutes and twenty seconds. He changed jobs
and joined the Doncaster Borough Police Force, he also changed
running clubs around this time joining the Doncaster LNER (Plant
Works) Harriers and continued winning, 1928; - Half Mile English
Railways Championship, Police Quarter Mile. He was then invited
by the Olympic Games Selection Committee to train with them and
takes part in trails for the Olympic Games to be held in Amsterdam.
Sadly he came second in his heat at the trails and did not progress
into the team but continued to race winning. 1929;- NUR Half mile,

1931;- Half Mile Yorkshire Champion. 1932;- National Police Mile
and Half Mile. He won a mile race in a recorded time of 4 mins
16 1/5 sec. He retired from racing in 1932 having won more than
60 races at distances from 100 yards to ten miles. Prizes were
presented to the winners of races in the period and his included
not only trophies and medals but clocks, barometers, china tea
services, canteens of cutlery, gold watches, glass vases, and
a sideboard.
The 19th Annual Broomfleet Sports Day was on
16th June 1928 held in Mr William Moore's "Chapel Croft"
field. This Sport day attracted a big crowd with a record number
of entries being reported as the "best attended sports meeting
in the district". It attracted entries for the "open"
races from a good distance away as can be seen from the winner
list in the open races.

Mrs Carroll Hirst, Treasurer Mr George Stones, Secretary Mrs Lynn
Bell. Mrs C Hirst moved away from the village and her sister Mrs
Susan Lake became the Chairperson.
A Sports Day was not held during, 1998 as a group
of local children had caused a great deal of damage/vandalism
to the village hall and the committee of the hall would not allow
the hall to be used for the Sports Day that year. It was intended
to include the results of the 1999 Sports Day but unfortunately
due to the lack of entries (only 12 being received) it was decided
not to hold a Sports Day for 1999, so the last Sports Day held

In June 1936 on Whit Monday there was a match
held between the men and the women of the village and also that
month the ladies of the village played the ladies of Newport and
won with 33 runs to 30 runs.
It is known that the village had a cricket
team in 1936 but no further details could be obtained
There was again thoughts in 1951 to start a cricket club and that
year Jim. Seward arranged a Whistdrive and Dance to raise funds
for the Cricket Club, then after a great number of years without
a team in February 1953 a team was entered into the Howdenshire
League. The officials were as follows;-Chairman A. Whitehead,
Vice Chairman G.Stones, Secretary, D.J.Seward, Captain R.Richardson.,
Vice Captain P. Harper. The first match was away to Howdendyke
with Broomfleet batting first and they were all out in a very
short time scoring only a grand total of only 8 runs which Howdendyke
passed in a short time . After this very poor start Broomfleet
team put in a lot of practise and managed to hold their own at
that standard . The first season they played in a field near to
Ponds Lane Corner well outside the village in which the Patchett's
farmhouse and buildings are now.
They then moved in 1953/4 and played in the newly
opened playing field near to the railway station. The pavilion
was never very grand being at one time an old railway coach and
at another an big old caravan. At the AGM in March 1955 the officers
were elected as above but G.Speck becoming the Vice Captain and
D. Richardson the Treasurer but then after a few more years the
club was disbanded.
A Broomfleet ladies team called The Broomfleet
Bloomers entered a team in 1990 in a competition held at the Newport
Recreation Ground on one Sunday afternoon , with team members
, Carol Hurst, Susan Lake, Manda Smith, Lynne Bell, Jenny Spencer,
and others. Then in 1992 a ladies team called now "The Dolly
Mixtures" entered a team in the Annual Ladies Cricket Tournament
at Newport and won through to become the champions and again the
Broomfleet team called the " Dolly Mixtures" entered
that competition in 1993 managed third place.
Page 106
Playing Field
The 3.5 acre field to the north of the railway
station was purchased from Mr A G Rogers and opened to the public
as a playing field in June 1953 . A band made up of villagers with
Mr J Coates as the conductor led a parade of people in fancy dress
to the field where Mr J. W. Waudby the Parish Council Vice Chairman
invited the Vicar C. J Reader to declare the field officially open.
Tea was later served in the school room for children and adults
and the children were presented with Coronation Mugs by Mr &
Mrs Whitehead. The Vicar & Mrs Reader were presented with souvenir
spoons. A whist drive and dance followed in the school room. This
field is managed by the Broomfleet Parish Council on behalf of the
Playing Fields Ass.

On the 22nd September 1921 a meeting was held
to form a football club to be named Broomfleet United A F C .
The "united" in the title was because there was as much
interest and players from the Landing, which nearly classed itself
as another village at that time. That team got the nicknamed "The
Fleets". It was considered that £15 would have to be
raised to buy equipment and a committee was elected as follows;-Chairman
H. Houseman, Secretary W. Frankish, Committee:- Messers C. Reed,
C. Brighton, L. Kitching, G.Richardson, Sharman, H.Tomlinson,
& H. Winn. Mr Frank Tindle of Holme Farm offered the use of
his field with provision that certain conditions were meet and
that a rent of £4 per season should be paid. Over 20 of those
present at the meeting joined the club and paid their subscriptions
so that £3 was raised. A further meeting was held on the
20th October 1921 when it was decided to use the "Parish
Rooms" as Headquarters for the club and that they should
advertise in the Sports Mail for more fixtures with other clubs.
Later in November 1921 S. Irwin was elected Team Captain with
the goalkeeper C. Nutt as Vice Captain. The amount of interest
must have been good for in December 1921 the "First Team"
play a drawn game against Laxton and the "Second Team"
lost 3 to 0 to North Cave. A.Williamson, Beckinsall, & B.Simms
were among the players at that time. There was a Benefit match
for Ben Simms who normally played at fullback for the team in
1922. This was played against Brantingham and Broomfleet won 4
to 0. Mr C Brighton was then secretary for a period around this
time. The team carried on playing through the 30's. Around that
time the team consisted of A.Simms, S.Irvin, A.Beck, G.Gelder,
J.Gelder, C.Sharman, A.Williamson, F.Tindle,C.Nutt, B.Simms, W.Stark.
and others, and was going strong in 1933 when G. Reed, F. Walker,
L. May and others were playing. During 1936 there was regular
whistdrives and dances held to raise funds for the football club
which was now called "St Mary's" and was a highly successful
team with G. Reed as the captain at that period.
Page 107
In 1937 Broomfleet St Mary's won through to the final of the "South
Cave British Legion Shield" and played Newbald on Boxing
Day but they lost 7 to 1. Tomlinson got the only Broomfleet goal.
A Broomfleet team played Walkington in February
1938 and although the final score is not known Broomfleet scorers
were Hutchinson 2, Tomlinson 1 and C. Gelder 1.
The football club disbanded in December 1938
and the balance of funds, £8.7s.6d,was put into a bank account
until a further football club formed. Although Broomfleet men
and boys continued to play football and the village had a very
good informal team that played against other village teams , mainly
on a Sunday afternoons , those that wanted to play regularly for
a team in the local leagues did so by playing for other village
teams .For example in the 1940/50's George Speck and Reg Gelder
played for North Ferriby and Eric Walmsley played for Newport
,and Gilberdyke and George Stones played for South Cave.
Then after 18years the St
Mary's Football Club was revived in August 1956 to play
in the 4th Division of the Hull Church League. With the officials;-
Chairman, Rev H.Y.Burnett, Secretary D. Baitson., Treasurer H.Hall.,
Captain G.Speck, Vice Captain E. Walmsley Players;- T. Reed, L.
Poskitt. K. Gelder R. Walmsley, K.Holtby, G.Stones, G.Hall, N.
Whitehaed , W. Johnson , G Speck , E Walmsley, and others This
team was very successful winning the league the first year with
some high scoring games as below;-
Nov 1956 Broomfleet 7 v Hull, Deaf & Dumb
Institute 3 (all Broomfleet goals were scored by their centre
forward Eric Walmsley.) Nov 1956 Broomfleet 9 v Albert Amateurs
1 (Broomfleet scorers E. Walmsley 3, K Holtby 2, N. Whitehead
2, T Reed 2.) Dec 1956 Broomfleet 10 v Alborough 1 ( Broomfleet

Broomfleet 17 v Deaf & Dumb Inst. 0 (Eight of Broomfleet players
scored some getting their hat trick.)
Due to the young men leaving the village to work
and to live elsewhere it became difficult to raise a team from
village men. With more "outsiders" playing, interest
in the team waned and it was again disbanded in the 1960's.
In May 1925 it was decided at a meeting to start
a tennis club as an area of land had been offered at Northfield
House by Mr John Underwood (this piece of land was in a field
to the right of the road at the corner on the way down to the
canal ) Officials to be ;- President T.P. Wheatley, Secretary
Gilbert Baitson. It was agreed that equipment would be required
and prospective members were
Page 108
requested to contact the secretary. The club must have been a success
as in 1926 Mr John Baitson was the secretary when a second court
was opened and regular matches held against other local villages.
There were election of new officers and a committee
at the 1927 AGM held in December Chairman T.P.Wheatley, Secretary
Miss N. Wilson, Treasurer H. Houseman, Committee;- Misses D.Kirk,
R. Hodgson, G.Baitson Messrs G. Richardson, J. Baitson., Groundsman;-
Mr J. Forvague. The club was again active as matches were held
against other clubs as far away as Middleton on the Wolds. Regular
Whistdrives and Dances held to raise funds and dance organised
in September 1928 by the Secretary Miss Nellie Wilson took place
in the Brickyard Recreation Room on a Friday evening when the
music was provided by the Brickwork's Jazz Band made up of Miss
N Wilson , Mr G. Richardson, and Mr H. Houseman with Mr G. Richardson
the M.C. for the evening and Mr J Gelder provided the refreshments.
The club continued as in June 1935 on a Wednesday,
Laxton was defeated by Broomfleet at the courts at Broomfleet
, with Broomfleet winning by 6 rubbers to 3 and 47 games to 34.
The state of the pavilion was discussed at a meeting in September
1938 and as repairs were required it was decided that Mr Basil
Reader, who was at that time secretary, would arrange a whistdrive
and dance to raise the funds, which he did and raised £6.
There were further matches held throughout 1939
but at the AGM meeting held in April 1940 there was little support
( due to the war effort ) It was decided that the club should
continue and officers were elected;- Chairman W.S. Hall, Secretary
Miss Nellie Wilson, Treasurer C. Houseman. There was no AGM in
1941 reported so the club must have disbanded that year and the
courts fell into disrepair.
In March 1938 a club was formed with the following
officials;- Secretary D. Baitson. Treasurer T. Seward. Regular
fishing matches sometimes weekly were held in the Market Weighton
Canal up to 1943 with some of the winners being:- B. Baitson,
T Seward, T.Sellers, R.A.Williamson, E Waslin, G.Taylor, T.Pashley,
B.Simms, J.Pashley, L.Hutchinson.
After the 2nd world war the locals held matches
in the Market Wieghton Canal at regular intervals during the summer
every year into the early 1950's when those taking part would
be:- T.Seward, W. Baldwin, G.Stones (snr), P. Coupland, J. Walmsley
and others
Page 108
George Stones (jnr) having been brought up at the Landing in Clayfield
House which was alongside the canal with ponds all around took
a keen interest in angling as a boy and later went into match
angling becoming the secretary of various Angling Clubs in Hull
and was also the secretary of the Hull Works Sports Angling Clubs
Ass for a good number of years arranging matches with over 100
anglers taking part , not only locally but also in the Nottingham,
Newark, York, Scunthorpe areas .For one year he arranged the Humberside
Championship Angling Competition on the River Ancholme in Lincolnshire
with nearly 400 anglers taking part on approximately 5 miles of
that river. Although no longer competing in matches he still is
a keen angler and fishes not only in the local waters but all
over Britain and has cast a line into the River Nile in Egypt,
the Danube in Germany amongst others.
Gun Club
Broomfleet had a Gun Club at one time and in
November 1928 the officers were :-Chairman Gilbert Baitson, Secretary
George Sellers, Treasurer H. Houseman. It is not known when the
club began or when it ceased as no further details are available.
Darts
Darts was a very popular game in the Red Lion
Public House and teams from there competed in the Howdenshire
Leagues and were successful but in the final of the 6-a-side Cup
in March 1990 the Red Lion Darts team played the team from the
Ferry Inn , Brough at Wards Hotel, Gilberdyke and lost to them
2-0. On the death in 1976 of George Stones who had been a keen
darts player for the Red Loin and other teams in the area, a memorial
trophy was donated and is still played for annually at Christmas
time.
Mrs Maureen Smith (nee Stones) was also a keen
darts lady, playing for the Red Lion teams and arranging a lot
of competitions in aid of charities mainly the Goole Hospital
Funds and from her death in 1989 a memorial trophy has been competed
for at the Red Lion each year at Christmas time.
A second hand small indoors bowls mat and bowls
was purchased by the Village Hall from Gilberdyke Village Hall
for £80 in 1991 and bowls was commenced to be played in the
hall on a Monday evening when up to twenty attended. A few years
later grants were obtained and a larger mat and sets of full-sized
bowls bought and bowls was played on Mondays and Thursday evening
up to 1998. Around Christmas time Knockout competitions are played.
The Individual Champions;- 1992 Mr Rob Watson, 1993 was Mr George
Stones, 1994/5 was
Page 109
Mrs Audrey Hutchinson, 1996 was Mrs Lil Griffiths. The Pairs competition
winners;-1992 from an entry of ten pairs Mrs Linda Watson and
Mr Stephen Lake, 1993 Mrs Lill Griffiths with Mr George Stones.
The Christmas competitions due to lack of interest in bowls was
not played for a couple of years but was started again in 1999
and the average attendance on a Monday evening is approx. 10/12
The Individual Champion in 1999 was Mrs Bridget Stones.
Mrs Sylvia Waudby from the Landing with her partner
Mrs Millie Walmsley from South Cave, (who normally play at the
indoor bowling club at North Cave) won the English Bowling Federation
Pairs title at Skegness in the summer of 1995.
The people of Broomfleet have always ridden cycles
to get to work and to socialise with the surrounding villages,
as the roads do not have any hills this was an relatively easy
and cheap mode of transport . It was not unusual for a person
to ride to the Caves and Brough areas to their place of work and
in the 1950's for a number of years George Stones, as a teenager
and a very keen pleasure cyclist rode to Hull and back every day
during the summer months to work. At that time there was a great
interest in pleasure cycling and a group of village teenagers
(Hazel & Alan Holtby, Phil Stainforth, Ken Gelder, George
Stones, Trevor Reed and others) would join up with teenagers from
Newport and the Caves area and ride to the seaside towns of Bridlington
and Hornsea on a number of Sundays mornings, spend the day there
and then ride back.
Trevor Reed and George Stones carried on with
their riding a little more seriously and as teenagers , rode out
most weekends to places further afield such as Saltburn (Nr Middlesborough),
Aysgarth , Kettlewell and Ingelton (Dales), staying at the then
popular Youth Hostels on the Saturday night, covering over 200
miles each weekend They planned to undertake a 14 days cycling
touring holiday in the summer of 1954 covering approx 100 miles
per day, staying at Youth Hostels taking in the Lake District
and then around Scotland as far as Loch Ness, but found that they
could not have their holidays at the same time so they went over
the route individually, Trevor following a week after George had
started.
Over the years one or two have used the cycle
as a sport, Royce Goodhand, G B Spence and T Henderson in the
1920/30's rode in the grass track races held at the local village
feasts and were a regular winners. Bill Henderson also rode in
grass track races a few times in the 1950's.
In 1998 Adam Duggleby from the Landing joined
the Goole Vermuyden Cycling Club and started cycle time trials,
proving that he was better than average and at
Page 111
13 years old rode a time of 1hr 2mins 53 seconds for his first 25
mile trial and under 24mins for the 10 mile time trial and continues
to ride and improve during 1999 when he then joined the Brough Cycling
Club. He also rides on the track and as been invited to train with
the English Track Team and he is showing promise.
Broomfleet has no history of this sport but in
the 1998/9 season Philip Dinsdale was selected to play for the
East Riding of Yorkshire Under 13's Squad and the Wigglesworth
boy's both played for the Ionions Rugby Club junior teams at Elloughton
in the 1998/9 season, one winning the award for scoring the most
tries in his age group and the other the award for the most improved
junior.
Netball
No records of any netball teams have been found
but the Parker girls were selected and played for their age group
Humberside Teams in the 1998/9 seasons.
